The Full Story
Micha Patiniott dedicated his 2007 collection Broken Stereo to “the ability and failure of the human voice." These works were made during his two year residency at the Rijksakademie, the Netherlands. In his new collection The Full Story, a series of paintings composed at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, he continues to consider this idea of human ability and failure, particularly as it applies to making art. Patiniott's paintings are characterized by fresh and expressive brushwork in a subtle pallet. The work depicts writers and painters engaged in playful and sometimes bizarre interaction with their books and pens, paintings and paint. These scenes fuse a humorous sense of wonder for the imagination, with a longing to be hidden and revealed simultaneously. Throughout the images, the characters and objects recur in altered incarnations and shifted relationships, weaving a multitude of interpretations into an intricacy that cannot be reduced to a single reading.
The pieces are
ultimately meditations on these mysterious relationships, as well as the
tension between vulnerability and strength, and the hiding and showing involved
in making art.
Micha Patiniott (1972, Amsterdam) received his degree in art in 1996 at the Hoge School voor de Kunsten Utrecht. He was a resident at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 2006 and 2007. In 2008 and 2009 he was a resident at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, US. He has been awarded with the Schürmann-Krant and the Louise Bourgeois Fellowship. The Full Story
Micha Patiniott wijdde zijn collectie Broken Stereo (2007) aan "het vermogen en het falen van de menselijke stem". Deze werken maakte hij gedurende zijn tweejarige residency aan de Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. In zijn nieuwe collectie The Full Story, een serie werken die hij maakte in het Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, gaat hij verder in op het idee van kunnen en falen, specifiek waar het kunst maken betreft. Patiniott's schilderijen kenmerken zich door een frisse en expressieve schilderwijze in een subtiel palet. Het werk toont schrijvers en schilders in speelse en soms bizarre interacties met hun boeken en pennen, schilderijen en verf. Deze scènes combineren de verwondering over de verbeelding met het verlangen om tegelijkertijd te verbergen en te onthullen. In de beelden keren karakters en objecten telkens opnieuw terug, in verschillende verschijningen en verschoven relaties. Ze vormen een vlechtwerk van meerdere interpretaties, die een enkelvoudige lezing onmogelijk maakt.
Uiteindelijk
zijn de werken beschouwingen over deze mysterieuze verhoudingen – maar ook over
de kwetsbaarheid en beklemming, en het verbergen en onthullen dat in het maken
van kunst een rol speelt.
