De tentoonstelling FAIL AGAIN FAIL BETTER brengt werken van verschillende kunstenaars bijeen. Wat ze met elkaar gemeen hebben is een meer dan normale interesse in de conditie van de mens, zijn tekort op verschillende gebieden en desondanks zijn enorme wil het iedere keer opnieuw te proberen. Zoals in de bekende theaterteksten van regisseur Samuel Beckett zijn de werken tragisch, komisch, en liefst allebei tegelijkertijd. FAIL AGAIN FAIL BETTER gaat niet alleen om de mislukking, maar ook om de menselijke drang naar perfectie en tegelijkertijd het besef van de onmogelijkheid dat te vinden. De tentoonstelling wil geen illustratie zijn van een theoretisch gefundeerd concept, eerder een associatieve, losse verzameling werken van recente en minder recente datum.

In de (vaak spectaculaire) video-installaties van Rensman en Werlich speelt improvisatie een belangrijke rol. Door bewust te werken met vrienden en familie als acteurs en zonder vastomlijnd script, bewerkstelligen ze dat impliciete, onderbewuste rolpatronen per ongeluk aan het licht komen: door fouten te maken en uit de rol te vallen (om daarna weer snel met de rol samen te vallen), geven ze in feite inzicht in intersubjectieve structuren die in onze westerse maatschappij een belangrijke rol spelen. Frontstage en backstage worden voor de kijker tijdelijk tegelijkertijd zichtbaar. Bijna al hun werk heeft een open en komisch voorkomen, maar herbergt op het tweede gezicht een donkere onderlaag.

Ene- Liis Semper (EST)

In haar videowerken en performances neemt Ene–Liis Semper uit Estland (opgeleid als theatervormgeefster) zichzelf als uitgangspunt. Met een scherp oog voor de psychische en fysieke ervaringen richt ze de camera op intieme aspecten van haar persoonlijke leven. De beelden die dat oplevert tonen echter weinig verwantschap met de documentaire beelden die binnen de kunst de laatste tijd steeds vaker worden ingezet. Semper legt subtiele momenten in de privésfeer vast om ze te bevriezen. Door met de beelden te spelen, ze om te draaien of terug te spelen weet ze een scherpe analyse neer te zetten van de tragische aspecten van haar (en ons) leven.

The Exhibition FAIL AGAIN FAIL BETTER brings together works of several artists. Their common factor is the unusual interest they share in the human condition and the human, and its shortcomings on various grounds, that however its failings has a tremendous urge to always try again. Like the well-known theatre-plays of Samuel Beckett they are tragic and humorous, and if possible both at once. FAIL AGAIN FAIL BETTER is not just about failure but also about the human urge to strive for perfection only to find impossibilities. This exhibition is not a illustration of a well founded theoretical framework, but a associative collection of separate works, some new and some a bit older.

In the often spectacular video installations of Rensman and Werlich improvisation plays an important role. By deliberately working with family and friends as actors that are forced to improvise and lacking an all compassing script implicit, subconscious role patterns emerge. All their work has a open and humorous character, the actors frequently drop out of their roles and often make mistakes that in turn expose intersubjective structures of our western society we hold dear. The viewer is shown frontstage and backstage simultaneously both within the films as well as in our own reality. Rensman and Werlich recently graduated at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague.

In her video-works and performances Ene-Liis Semper herself (educated as theatre designer) is the departure point. With a keen eye for psychic and physical experience she points the camera on intimate aspects of her personal life. The resulting images have little in common with the documentary like images that have been displayed within the art-world recently. Semper documents subtle moments in a private setting and freezes them. By playing with images, turning and rewinding them she presents a sharp analysis of the tragic aspects of her (and our) lives.
