Dancing Dust to Dust

The video installation ‘Dancing Dust to Dust’ consists of a double video projection.

From above the artist has zoomed in on a small a pile of organic material.
Every now and then some music can be heard: ‘New beginnings’ by Elmer Bernstein.
Particles of dust seem to be moving with the extension of the music, which change in form like swarming micro organisms’ and are transformed through their movements.  Much colour is to seen in this play of dancing particles a festive character,  despite a process of destruction and transformation occurring at the same time.

Dust to dust is referring to the saying in the bible: ‘Know that you are dust and to dust you will return’  The title combines the themes of romantic love and the inevitable fate of perishableness. And at the same time it also seems to bear a motto in itself; dancing until you ascend into dust.

Marjan Laaper uses the metaphorically potential of her subjects intuitively and intelligently, and because of this the concerning richness in the work is only slowly revealed.

In this show Marjan Laaper will also show her piece ‘Aspen’ (2007). Also a double projection with sound, the image  shows branches and leaves of an aspen tree moving in the wind. The sound produced by the leaves is transformed by the artist into an acoustic composition that ascents  and decreases. There is a say about the aspen tree that is this tree could speak a well trained listener could hear predictions of the future.

In 2008, the video of ‘ Dancing Boy’ by Marjan Laaper will be shown in a variety of cities in Australia and in New Zealand. A.o. (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Darwin, Brisbane, New Castle, Adelaide and Auckland).
